Do I have to attend modeling school to be a model?
It helps, but it is not necessary. Modeling school usually teach you about hair styling, skin care, runway  techniques, pose and modeling profession. You do not have to attend a modeling school to gain the knowledge. But, you should have some understanding of  modeling before going out. Any reputal agency that signs you up should train you for free.

What do you  need to be a model?
An aspiring model should be at least 5''7" tall with  clear skin, healthy hair, straight teeth and a toned and well proportioned body.  A model also needs to be....

Ambitious: You won`t become a model by sitting at home watching tv. You have to get out there and sell yourself.

Intelligent: To succeed a model must be an intelligent business person. You must know how to spend and invest money wisely. (Modeling is often a short lived carrer.) You  will need to be able to conduct business with agents, photographers, clients  etc..

Confident: You must be able to sell yourself to a client before he/she will allow you to sell his/her products.

Be able to handle rejection: All models at some time in their carrer has to face rejection. You can`t take it personally you simply don`t meet the expectations of the  client.

Independence.  Models have to travel a lot and sometimes have to move away from their families.  You will have to get use to being on your own for a lot of the time.

Discipline. A model must be organized in order to keep track of the different dates, times and locations of appointments so that she can show up at appointments and go-sees on time.

Stamina. A model is sometimes on her feet all day. She must be healthy and in shape to be able to work all day and still look good.

Be able to take critisism: A lot of models are hounded by the press and often called horrible names. This is a high price to pay for fame and will have to take it in your stride.

Do get a friend or family member to take some photos of you in different angles. Full  length, head shot, with/without make-up, different poses.

Types of models and modeling

Now you  don`t have to be wafer thin to become a model. The modeling industry is open to everyone, all body types and sizes. If you want to be a model have a look at the list of different types of modeling and then decide the one you want to be. The  world is filled with beautiful women, but not everyone can be a model, it takes a special person to do this. The most important ingredients are confidence and to believe in yourself.

High Fashion & editorial modeling
The most glamourous jobs including campaigns,  collections and magazine editorials are reserved for the top editorial/fashion  models. This work is very eagerly sought after by fashion models because of the  exposure it provides.

Runway modeling
This is one of the most effective ways to gain exposure. It is considered the most glamorous type of live modeling. It requires a lot of  confidence and grace. The model must make the audience think that she loves the  outfit she is wearing. She must look comfortable and make even the dullest  outfit look attractive. There is a strict minimum height requirement of 5'9" for  runway work. (Unless you`re Kate Moss).

They just have a way with showing off a product. They have that winning smile. These models have beautiful teeth and a great personality.

Plus models
For the bigger woman. Designers are going out of their way to meet the demands of plus women.

Fit models
The garment is cut for their body type. You never see this type of model but these are the ones that our clothes are measured from. The fit model must maintain their weight and size to work in this segment of the industry. They can work in this industry for a long time, and the work is all year round.

Getting noticed

Your safety
When looking for an agency take care. There are a lot of agencies out  there that exploit young girls and boys. Don`t hand any money over. A  respectable agency would not take money and should fund you until you start making money. Check out the atmosphere at the agency. It should be professionally run and if everyone is busy working you know that you are in the  right place. Don`t go to an agency if it is run from an apartment/house they won`t be professionals. Know matter how much you want to be a model it is not  worth putting yourself in danger.

Getting  spotted
Go out and be seen. You won`t get noticed sitting at home in front of  the TV. Model scouts discover hundreds of girls and boys each year on the streets in England. The most commonest places are Piccadily Circus, Oxford st but people get noticed every day on trains, in shops even in Mcdonalds. But if  you really want to be seen go to all the fashion events that are on through out the year. The best place is the clothes show at December where scouts from all agencies are on the prowl for the next Giselle. Be careful though. If any one  does approach you claiming to be a model scout, ask for their card and don`t give any personal details away. And don`t get too excited out of every 100 only 2-3 get anywhere.

Presenting yourself
First impressions always count. If you are going to visit an agency there are a few simple guidelines you should follow. You should be at least  5`8", size 8-10, measurements of roughly 34", 24", 34". This is just a guide  line but it gives you a rough idea. Don`t worry if you don`t fit into this range  there are a lot of agencies that are specifically for petite or plus-size models. There are also specialist agencies for "parts," which deal with hand, foot and hair models. Wear fashionable but simple clothes that show off your figure, flat shoes and wear as little make-up as possible (if any at all). Be as  natural as you can be. Don`t try to present yourself the way a model looks. They  have professionals to make them look the way they do.

Do your  homework!
Find out the drop-in times of the agency yo are going to visit.  Find out what you need to bring with you. Photos, a portfolio if you have one.  Don`t be late and make sure you have everything they ask you to bring. Their working day is very hectic and by having every thing prepared will save them and  you time.

The most important thing is!
If you don`t have what it takes to become a model, Its not your fault. It doesn`t mean that you aren`t beautiful you ae who you are.  Modeling is just like any other job Just as not everyone can be an actor, or a brain surgeon.

Do`s and don`ts when modeling

Finding an Agency

Don`t sign with an agency until you have looked around. And Don`t sign with an agency just  so you can be a model.

Don`t go a lone if it looks unprofessional (in fact don`t go at all).

Don`t hand any money over. An agent should never ask for money to represent you. Your agent  gets paid when they get you jobs period! There should be no cost to you up  front, if there is start looking elsewhere.

Don`t use  agencies that advertise in the backs of magazines or newspapers

Don`t over do  the make-up or clothes and be yourself. You never get a second chance to make a first impression so make the first one a lasting one (and I don`t mean going in stinking of fish).

Don`t sign a contract until you understand the terms, and are happy with their terms. You might want to get a solicitor to look over it before you put your signature to  it.

Do leave immediately if they ask you to strip or if you feel uncomfortable

Do ask for examples of their work and referrals of clients and models so that you can ask about them.

Do ask to see  some work samples or tear sheets of the photographers used by the agency.

Do ask how much their percentage is. They shouldn't get more than 20 to 25 percent of your payment.

Do listen up and ask questions if you don't understand.

What do  agencies do?

1. They find new faces.
2. They advise and train their models.
3. They promote their models and manage their careers.
4. They schedule and book their  models.
5. They bill clients and collect fees.

Don`t sign up  with them if they say

"We can  guarantee you work."
"As soon as you have trained, you'll be  working."
"Our classes are completely full but there is one opening. If you  sign up right away we can fit you in."
"You are exactly what we're looking  for."
"We'll have you working immediately."

Starting out

Don`t pay a  lot of money for modeling lessons. The agency should train you if they sign you up.

Don`t Send only comp cards, duplicate photos,or headshots, and don't expect to get them returned to you.

Do take some photos. Make sure they are in focus and show both face and full-body shots. And  don't overlook some of your best features.

Do practice, walking tall, walking in stilettos, posing. This will make it easier when you go to audition

Do gather as much information as you can, speak with experienced models, talk with reputable agents, read books and magazines

Once you become a model

Don`t bitch. If you haven`t got anything good to say about someone don`t say  anything.

Don`t smoke. If you do smoke try giving up.

Do get plenty  of rest. Modeling is hard work and you are often on your feet all day. Try and  have at least 7 hours sleep each night.

Do keep fit. Do aerobics, try yoga or go swimming. It is important that you look after your body.

Do keep your skin looking healthy. Drink plenty of water.
